Get the latest RON95, RON97, and diesel fuel prices in Malaysia. Learn how these weekly price changes affect your road trip budget and car rental planning.

Official Retail Prices (30 April – 6 May 2026)

The Ministry of Finance has released the official retail fuel prices for the upcoming week. For Peninsular Malaysia, the prices effective from Thursday, 30 April, through Wednesday, 6 May 2026, are as follows:

  • RON95: RM3.97 per litre
  • RON97: RM4.90 per litre
  • Diesel: RM5.12 per litre

These prices reflect a slight increase from the previous week, when RON95 was priced at RM3.87 and RON97 at RM4.85. In East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak), the price of diesel remains capped at RM2.15 per litre.

Why Are Fuel Prices Fluctuating?

Domestic fuel prices are directly linked to the global crude oil market. In recent weeks, Brent crude oil prices have consistently traded above US$100 per barrel, hovering around US$108.83 on May 1, 2026. This global volatility is the primary driver behind the significant price shifts we've seen locally. For context, RON95 hit RM4.02 in mid-April, while RON97 reached a high of RM5.35 in early April. The weekly adjustments are determined by the government's Automatic Pricing Mechanism (APM).

Understanding the BUDI95 Targeted Subsidy

While the market price for RON95 is RM3.97, some drivers are able to purchase it at the subsidized rate of RM1.99 per litre. This is thanks to the BUDI95 targeted subsidy program for eligible individuals and smallholders. However, it's important to note that the government reduced the monthly subsidy quota from 300 litres to 200 litres, starting in April 2026. Once an eligible recipient exceeds this 200-litre quota, they must pay the full market price for any subsequent fuel purchases within that month.

Estimating Fuel Costs for Your Road Trip

How do these prices translate to real-world travel costs? Let's calculate a round-trip journey from Seremban to Penang, which covers a distance of approximately 860 kilometres. Driving a modern, fuel-efficient vehicle, like a model from our 2024-2026 fleet with an average consumption of 18 km per litre, the estimated cost would be:

  • Total fuel needed: 860 km / 18 km/l ≈ 47.8 litres
  • Estimated cost with RON95: 47.8 litres x RM3.97 ≈ RM190
  • Estimated cost with RON97: 47.8 litres x RM4.90 ≈ RM234

These figures show that fuel can be a significant portion of your total trip expenses. Opting for a vehicle with better fuel economy can make a noticeable difference in your overall budget.

━━ Frequently Asked

FAQ

Are fuel prices the same across all of Malaysia?

No. While RON95 and RON97 prices are uniform across Peninsular Malaysia, the price of diesel in East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak) is capped at RM2.15 per litre, which is different from the market price in the Peninsula.

I am eligible for the BUDI95 subsidy. Can I use it with a rental car?

Yes, you can. The BUDI95 subsidy is tied to the eligible individual, not the vehicle. If you are an approved recipient, you can use your subsidy entitlement when refueling any car, including a rental vehicle.

How often are fuel prices in Malaysia announced?

Retail prices for petrol and diesel in Malaysia are announced on a weekly basis. The Ministry of Finance typically makes the announcement every Wednesday, with the new prices taking effect from Thursday until the following Wednesday.

Do I need to pay a security deposit to rent a car from JRV?

No. JRV Car Rental Services offers zero-deposit rentals for all vehicles in our fleet. This helps reduce your upfront costs, freeing up more of your budget for other travel expenses like fuel.
